The book is out!!!

It is a hard time in the world, but my book is now officially out and I’m so proud of the work I put into it. I hope if you read it, it will bring something that only story can. The book can be ordered from Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, Target, Amazon, word west, or through your local favorite bookstore or your library. If you like it, let me know 😊

It was a recent review over at NPR and I also did interviews with The Rumpus and Necessary Fiction.

Finally, this book came to be because of so many people who supported me, who I love and count on. So I’m including my acknowledgments here, as a shoutout of thanks to all of them. It is extraordinary to have kindness in this world.

Acknowledgments

Every writer works alone, but no book is written alone. Without the support, love, friendship, of the following people, the stories in this book would be far worse or not at all.

To the editors and staff of the journals, where some of these pieces originally appeared, huge thanks for the enormous work that you all do in running wonderful journals and getting new writing out for readers everywhere.

I have so much thankfulness for having ended up with the lovely people of Word West. I could never have imagined such a wonderful experience for creating this book with a publisher. Josh Graber is an amazing editor and David Queen is a wonderful and big-hearted publisher. Everyone involved is the absolute best.

I am lucky to have worked with and be surrounded by wonderful colleagues, peers, and friends. Many thanks to the English Department at Iowa State University, Volker Hegelheimer, Deanna Ward, Deanna Stumbo, Tina Coffelt, Debra Marquart, Charissa Menefee, Ned Balbo, Rachel Mans McKenny, Claire Kruesel, Brian Burmeister, and Kirk Wilkins.

Some of these stories were written under the guidance of the following amazing teachers: KL Cook, Ron Wallace, Lydia Fitzpatrick, Emily Ruskovich, Jason England, and Nate Brown. A gigantic thank you to my former professor, current friend, and personal Yoda, Marc Seals, as well.

To my Xenomorph hive, you all keep me sane, supported, and feeling loved, despite our Oreo battles: Teo Mungaray, Hannah Cohen, Kate Mead-Brewer, and E. Kristin Anderson.

Many thanks to the supportive community of friends and writers who have given me support, advice, and their lovely friendships: Lisa, Koca, Samantha Kohnert, Maria Rago, Kristin Gulotta, Ean Weslynn, Matty Layne Glasgow, M. Molly Backes, Crystal Stone, Renee Christopher, Camille Meyers, Meghann Hart, Jennifer Hutchins,  Matthew Paul, Gillian Ramos, Carla Sofia Ferreira, Beth Gilstrap, Alvin Park, Ellie Leonard, Katy McMahon, Monet Thomas, Jordan Kurella, Maria Haskins, Juan Martinez, Sara Lippmann, Amber Sparks, Kendra Fortmeyer, and so many more.

Finally, I would not be a writer or continue writing if it were not for the love, friendship, kindness, and awesome of the amazing people who make my life a life. To my loves, a million thank yous will not suffice: Stephanie Gunn who has read everything I’ve ever written, even when it’s scary, a billion reasons; Brontë Wieland who makes up best house even separated by miles; Brian Ramos who I could spend every moment and adventure with; Philippe Meister, roommate extraordinaire; Erin Schmiel, my partner in rage coffee and friendship. To my amazing family, so much love: Mama, Papa, Mike, Gabe, Jack, Henry, Westley, Rowan, Kimberly, Millie Hatch.

BIG NEWS *heart eyes emoji*

My short story collection, Collective Gravities, is due out from the lovely Word West in July 2020.The cover is now up (and I am so lucky with how lovely it is!) and pre-orders have begun (link is here). If you are interested in getting the book, please do consider pre-ordering as they are one of the most helpful ways to support authors and presses! If you pre-order, let me know through my contact form or on Twitter, as I’d love to send you a thank you card!

I will be planning a book tour for next year, so if your city or favorite bookstore is looking for a reader, let me know!

I am also excited to be offering an online class that I’m very excited about. I will be offering it in both February and June, and sign-up for both dates has begun. I have been teaching a university class on Monster Theory and Othering for the past 6 years, as a way of teaching students about rhetoric and communication in today’s world. This class looks at how societies have always used the specter of the other as a monster to keep people in check and afraid. We also examine ways in which horror has both embraced and attempted to combat this. Over the past few months, I have been working on re-designing this course to incorporate creative writing and creation of new monsters–ways to combat/confront othering and systemic violences (a recent example of this done in film would be something like Get Out).  This course will be a month long class/workshop featuring 2-3 classes a week. Each class will feature a written and/or audio recorded lecture, readings, questions to consider for discussion, and writing prompts. The goal by the end of class is to have tools to create your own monster (in some narrative form–though as a fan of multimodal composition, we’ll discuss broad interpretations of narrative as well).  The class will feature two cost options. For 100, you will have access to all course materials and prompts. For 200, I will also do in-depth feedback critiques on the narratives your produce in the class (up to 35 pages of writing or tbd length for other narrative forms). If you’re interested, sign-up is here: https://forms.gle/ETviZPryeyX8QwiS8

In other news, I will also be opening my editing services back up. If you have a book length project (poetry chap, sequences, or full length OR fiction short story collections, novels, or flash chapbook), I offer reasonable prices and ten years of editing experience. Please use the contact form on this website if you are interested!
