I am also excited to be offering an online class that I’m very excited about. I will be offering it in both February and June, and sign-up for both dates has begun. I have been teaching a university class on Monster Theory and Othering for the past 6 years, as a way of teaching students about rhetoric and communication in today’s world. This class looks at how societies have always used the specter of the other as a monster to keep people in check and afraid. We also examine ways in which horror has both embraced and attempted to combat this. Over the past few months, I have been working on re-designing this course to incorporate creative writing and creation of new monsters–ways to combat/confront othering and systemic violences (a recent example of this done in film would be something like Get Out).  This course will be a month long class/workshop featuring 2-3 classes a week. Each class will feature a written and/or audio recorded lecture, readings, questions to consider for discussion, and writing prompts. The goal by the end of class is to have tools to create your own monster (in some narrative form–though as a fan of multimodal composition, we’ll discuss broad interpretations of narrative as well).  The class will feature two cost options. For 100, you will have access to all course materials and prompts. For 200, I will also do in-depth feedback critiques on the narratives your produce in the class (up to 35 pages of writing or tbd length for other narrative forms).
